There are many symptoms associated with Psoriasis and Eczema, but perhaps the most debilitating symptom of all is itching. The itching and scratching can affect our ability to concentrate. The inability to concentrate can affect all aspects of our lives from work, to problem solving and even intimacy with our loved ones. It can even cause insomnia.
A recent study from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark showed a prevalence of sleep disturbance in people with psoriasis. The researchers found that 25 percent of patients with psoriasis reported clinical insomnia and 59% were considered poor sleepers. Itch was the main predictor of impaired sleep. Is your itchy psoriasis keeping you up at night?
How To Control The Itch
There are a number of things you can do to control your itching. You could try taking an over-the-counter antihistamine like Benadryl. Antihistamines are not the best solution for psoriasis or eczema itch problems but they can help take the edge off if it gets bad during the day. You could also try an anti-itch cream. These creams will likely contain hydro-cortisone as an active ingredient to help reduce itching. If you have time you can always take an oatmeal bath or a bath in Epson salts. Taking a bath can be very soothing but most busy people today simply don't have time for this type of treatment.
Perhaps the quickest and most effective way to stop an itch is with an anti-itch spray. Sprays are great because they are easy to use and work quickly. Recently there have been some great advancements in using natural ingredients to stop the itch. Perhaps one of the best natural ingredients is Neem Oil.
What is Neem Oil?
Neem oil is derived from the fruits and seeds of the evergreen Neem tree. Neem trees are typically found in the Indian sub-continent but they have also been introduced into other areas in the tropics.
Neem oil naturally contains nimbidin & nimbin compounds, that are known to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Neem oil is rich in Vitamin E and has hydrophobic properties that helps creates a thin layer to protect the skin and reduce moisture loss. Additionally, Neem oil is a natural pain killer (analgesic), and can provide immediate relieve from discomforting skin irritation.
Why Use a Neem Itch Spray?
Anti-itch sprays made with natural Neem oil can often be used anywhere on the body. They can even be used for to treat an itchy scalp. A good Neem itch spray will not be greasy but should rather feel like you just applied a gentle moisturizing cream. Some of the benefits include:
